The Value of Multi-Variate Powder Flow Characterisation

Powder processing typically involves several unit operations, with each subjecting the powder to different stress and strain regimes, from the high stress, static conditions present in hoppers to the dispersed, dynamic state of a fluidised bed dryer. As powder behaviour is influenced by process conditions, flowability will vary across applications and the requirements for optimal performance will differ. In order to identify powders that are compatible with an entire process train it may be necessary to compromise between these different requirements and getting this balance wrong can be costly, both financially and in terms of delays. One solution is to define a design space for individual unit operations or the process train as a whole, however, in order to do so, it is necessary to characterise the powders under conditions which simulate those present in process. This can be achieved through the application of powder rheology to employ methods that accurately quantify dynamic flow, bulk and shear properties thereby simulating the range of conditions to which a powder will be subjected to in process.
